Message Yes the Richmond gears are made of a stronger metal alloy, but the reason for the variance in noise is the fact that diff building is an iterative process. Ideally, you would set up the gears, install in the car, run the car a short distance and listen for noise; then, if noisy...and before a wear pattern gets started, break down the diff., reshim, reinstall, listen again, and repeat the process till there is no noise. People are getting the idea that it is just a drop in and go proposition.
It might take 5 breakdowns and shimming operations, or the builder might get lucky and get it in one....but to consistently get a quiet setup, you have to be willing to adjust, adjust, adjust and do so before putting hardly any miles on the diff. The problem is: who has the time and money to do this 4 or 5 times ? Especially when it costs $100 each way to ship a diff. (not to mention the time/cost to drop the diff out of the car each time). To make an analogy: if you need to have a piano tuned, what are the odds that the tuner is going to get the perfect pitch of a key with only one turn of a peg ? Not likely, but possible. Chances are he/she will need to tweak it more than once. I speak from experience because it took 3 setups to get my Leader gears to an acceptable noise level (not silent, but close enough). The gears are great...it just might require a lot more $ to get them quiet than most people are willing to put into this mod. Most people end up settling with what they have... when they should really have the diff reshimmed. The best thing you can do is buy a diff with Leader Gears already set up from a person who has had it in their car and knows them to be quiet :)
